Why Does Forte "Forget" my Skin and Control Surface

Why Does Forte "Forget" my Skin and Control Surface
Every so often I start Forte and it has "forgotten" the skin I set "Wide1300" thank you, and the control surface I use BCR2000. Why is that???? I'm not sure why... Anyone?
Thank you, Pedro
Thank you, Pedro
Re: Why Does Forte "Forget" my Skin and Control Surface
Please, does this happen to anyone??? Sometimes I start Forte and it goes to the sound preference page, it has forgotten my skin selected and it does not remember the control surface I have selected. My question is what happens that Forte will forget this from the last time I started it? Dirk??

Re: Why Does Forte "Forget" my Skin and Control Surface
Hi Pedro,
I have no idea.... both options are stored in options.ini. When that happens are those the only settings that are ignored or are there others? Maybe the options.ini file can't be found or opened every once in a while. What the reason might be I have no clue, really.

Life would be much easier if I had the source code.
Re: Why Does Forte "Forget" my Skin and Control Surface
Thank you Dirk that helps. I ll take a look at that file and compare...
What seems to get lost is the Skin, sound card settings it opens on that preference page and finally the control surface definition. The control surface definition is sometimes there but Forte sees it as BCR 2000] as oppose to BCR2000. So I have to reselect BCR2000] for input and output and then it works. I thought that a previous update allowed Forte to recognize controllers out of place... This behavior was not there after 2.2.18 for me. Perhaps someone else will see this. Could a plug in crash trigger it?

Re: Why Does Forte "Forget" my Skin and Control Surface
That looks like a parsing error to me. Can you post your .ini file? Strange that this happens randomly though. Computers rarely do things randomly....

Re: Why Does Forte "Forget" my Skin and Control Surface
Thank you Dirk I will. Should I wait until it gives me the "default" skin and post that *.ini file? Or should I post the file when it is working properly? Let me know...
Here is my Options.ini
One thing that happens is that on subsequent Forte runs my Control surface is called BCR2000I, so Forte does not recognize it. So, that seems to be hapenning to the control surface. I don't know why sometimes my skin goes away and it starts on the sound page however...

My options.ini page when the skin is wrongly loaded
Here is the options.ini file. The skin loaded incorrectly. I see it says default. Should it say "Wide1300" which is the skin I had. I guess I notices now that it always says Defulat although it works sometimes but sometimes it does not. I see that Forte sees the BCR2000 in the options.ini file different from the surface it detects as BCR2000I. Not sure why the letter "I" is after the BCR2000 but that is why it does not recognizethe surface.

Re: Why Does Forte "Forget" my Skin and Control Surface
Life would be much easier if I had the source code.
Re: Why Does Forte "Forget" my Skin and Control Surface
No, not at all. I didn't even see it. When it loaded the wrong skin I made a copy of the *.ini file and pasted it here. I didn't edit the file at all.
I remember on an old version I think it used to write the BCR2000 as BCR2000[1]. When I run Forte, I always have to go and select the BCR2000 and select as input and output "BCR2000I" since "BCR2000" does no appear. If it is not there then I have to write it on the control surfaces page. Either way, it does not work. It should remember the control surface from execution to execution right?
By looking at both files I can see how the default skin was corrupted. The second file wrote it as "Default". A workaround for me is to call the "Wide1300", the "Default" skin by making a copy.
Do you think there is anything related to administrator permissions at play? I get the feeling that there is something that makes Forte write a default file and Forte is doing it. My other curiousity is why Forte detcts my surface as BCR2000I as opposed to BCR2000. I reminds me of the problem fixed in version 2.2.18 where Forte can read now control surface in any order they are detected. Here Forte "thinks" the BCR2000 detected is another surface..
Thank you for taking a look at this....

Re: Why Does Forte "Forget" my Skin and Control Surface
Hi Dirk,
What determines the name
Given to BCR2000 by Forte like BCR2000c instead of BCR2000.
Forte is making a mistake writing that. Wasn't there in 2.1.126.

I don't know really. It looks like a parser error to me. Try to delete (rename to .ini.old) your .ini file and let forte reconstruct it. See what happens.... Look at the CS definition file as well. Maybe an error is in there.

Good idea I will and report back thank you...
Re: Why Does Forte "Forget" my Skin and Control Surface
It appears that when I turn on my computer if I don't have the power on first for my USB hub that hosts the usb plugs for my keyboards and bcr2000 then the bcr2000 will appear as bcr2000a which Forte assumes it's different than bcr2000. Sometimes Forte writes default on the options.ini page. It may be a parsing error. It works 95% of the time. For some reason on 2.1.126 did not havew that problem. I know that there were some enancements on 2.2.18 that dealt with the ability of Forte to accept control surfaces in different order. Maybe that is what is causing the parsing error.

That's a good clue, yes. So there might be something in fortes new code. But to be sure, you should clean your system up, and remove ghost USB devices. (Google that up).
Then , I would advice you to use a USB hub with an external power supply instead of a bus-powered one: weird behaviour of USB devices can be a symptom of underpowering.
