1. Format your harddrive :Freash copy of windows xp >

Service Pack 2 :Before you start

2. Make sure you have lots of Memory under win xp min. 256 really 512 is the full os
power!!
the best bet is to start off with 2gig. Because 512 will hold XP TO THE MAX by itself.
one gig & ahalf for
cubase,wavlab,sonar, v-stack ,Live & Reason ( That would be 512 just for running
Master Applications !!! also this will stop using up your win xp 512
memory bank ) and the rest of the memory 1 gig for vst, dxi ,

E always defrag before & after (Very import. !!!!) . get use to it i know some times it takes forever
to defrag but it helps alot in keeping your Data (i.e. audio,midi,and video )
in working oder and fast searching. to keep in mind the longer you wait to defrag your files the
longer it takes. Just do it every day becuase in the long run you should have any hard drive prob.
Try this... Open defrag click defrag for the first time then keep Defraging every time it completes .
each time it cmpletes you will notice it finsh pretty fast. defrag about 5 times or as many as you
wish. keep it NICE AND PACKED !!!

1. Processor scheduling should be set to background services and not Programs.
Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance Settings >
Advanced Tab > Background Services

2. Visual effects should be set to a minimum.
Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance Settings > Visual
Effects Tab > Adjust for best performance

3. Switch Off Desktop Background Image
Right Click Desktop > Properties > Desktop Tab > Background None

4. Disable Screen Saver
Right Click Desktop > Properties > Screen Saver > None

5. Disable Fast User Switching
Start > Settings > Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on or off >
Untick Use Fast User Switching

6. Switch Off Power Schemes
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Power Options > Always On > Turn off monitor and
turn off hard discs to Never

7. Switch Off Hibernation
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Power Options > Hibernate > Untick Hibernation

8. Activate DMA on Hard Discs/CD ROMS
Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > IDE
ATA/ATAPI Controllers > Right Click Primary IDE channel and Secondary IDE channel
> Properties > Advanced Settings Tab > Tra

9. Disable System Sounds
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds Tab > Sound

10. Do Not Map Through Soundcard
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Hardware Tab >
(highlight your soundcard from the list) > Properties > Audio Devices > (highlight your
soundcard from the list) > Properties

11. Disable System Restore
Start > Settings > Control Panel> System > System Restore Tab. Tick the "Turn off
System Restore on all Drives"

12. Disable Automatic Updates
Start > Settings > Control Panel> System > Automatic Updates > Turn off automatic
updating. I want to update my computer manually

13. Startup and Recovery Options
Start > Settings > Control Panel> System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings >
Untick Automatically Restart

14. Disable Error Reporting
Start > Settings > Control Panel> System > Advanced > Error Reporting > Disable Error
Reporting

15. Disable Remote Assistance
Start > Settings > Control Panel> System > Remote > Untick Allow remote assistance

16. Fix Swap File (Virtual Memory)
Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance Settings >
Advanced > Virtual Memory Change > Custom Size. Set initial and maximum size to the
same value

17. Speed Up Menus
Start > Run > Regedit > HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Control Panel > Desktop Folder.
Set MenuShowDelay to 1

18. Disable Offline Files
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Folder Options > Offline Files Untick "Enable Offline
Files"

19. Disable Remote Desktop
Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Remote > Untick "Allow users to connect
remotely to this computer"

20. Disable Internet Synchronise Time
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Date and Time > Internet Time > Untick
"Automatically synchronize with internet time server"

21. Disable Hide Inactive Icons
Start > Settings > Taskbar and Start Menu > Taskbar TAB > Uncheck "Hide Inactive
Icons"

22. Disable Automatic Desktop Cleanup Wizard
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display > Desktop > Customise Desktop > Untick
"Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard every 60 days"

23. NTFS Disk Performance Optimise NTFS from hell
The NTFS file system is the recommended file system because of its advantages in terms of
reliability and security and because it is required for large drive sizes. However, these advantages
come with some overhead. You can modify some functionality to improve NTFS performance as
follows:

Disable last access update. By default NTFS updates the date and time stamp of the last access
on directories this update process can slow
performance. To disable:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentContolSet\Control\Filesystem
You will need to enter this as a new Dword:
NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate set value to 1

Reboot after making changes.

24. Correcting System Hang at Startup

the Taskbar, it may be due to one specific service (Background Intelligent Transfer) running in the
background. Microsoft put out a patch for this but it didn't work for me. Here's what you do:

1. Click on Start/Run, type 'msconfig', then click 'OK'.
2. Go to the 'Services' tab, find the 'Background Intelligent Transfer' service, disable it, apply the
changes & reboot.



This problem with the Background Intelligent Transfer Service should have been corrected in
Windows update Q 314862, part of Service Pack 1.

25. Speed up CD Copying to Hard Drives
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem
You will need to create a Key here. Right Click on the FileSystem folder and select
New>Key Name it CDFS CacheSize, this must be added as a binary value, then type in
this value:ff ff 00 00(it doesn't matter about capitals or lower case) Prefetch, this must be
added as a DWORD value, then type in this value: 4000 hex
PrefetchTail, this must be added as a DWORD value, then type in this value: 4000 hex

26. Disable Disc Indexing Service
Right Click Start > Explorer > Right Click Each Disc > Properties > Untick "Allow
Indexing Service to index this disc for fast file searching"

27. Swap File Tweak For Users with 256 MB RAM or more this tweak will boost their
Windows- and Game-Performance. What it does: It tells Windows not to use any Swap
File until there is really no more free RAM left. Open the System Configuration Utility
<\l > by typing msconfig.exe in the RUN command. There in your System.ini you have
to add "ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1" under the 386enh section. Restart your Windows
and enjoy better Game performance

28. To Disable Dr. Watson
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\AeDebug
Delete the AeDebug key

29. Uninstall unwanted components

Locate sysoc.inf (windows\inf\sysoc.inf) on the main drive and make a backup of it Open the
Sysoc.inf file. Each line of text in the file represents a component that can be displayed in the
Add/Remove Windows Components dialog. Delete the word HIDE for any component that you
want to see in the dialog (do not erase the commas). Save the Sysoc.inf file, then close it, and
reboot your computer.

The Add/Remove Windows Components dialog will now display the items you want to remove.I
have removed everything but the WMI, COM+ and
Distributed Transaction Coordinator!

30.Control Panel>Administrative Tools:

or a network in any way. If you have an NIC or modem of any sort, I specified which ones
and what settings with I=Internet and A=Automatic

Once you have set all of these close out of the services and restart

31.Windows Explorer caches DLLs(Dynamic-Link Libraries)in memory for a period of time after
the application using them has been closed. This can be an inefficient use of memory.

Create a new DWORD sub-key named
"AlwaysUnloadDLL" set to 1
Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

32. If your using XP <\l > and a nvidea card and experiance the well known lockup
bug when trying to play games ect ect the following should fix the problem,
1. go to display properties\advanced\troubleshoot tab\then un check enable write
combining
2.go to start\run\regedit\the to the following key

create the following dword > LargePageMinimum set it to
ffffffff in the hexadecimal which will = 4294967295 in value -- reboot <\l >
3.try setting the agp <\l > apeture to 128MB loacated in bios <\l > settings

33. this will be a fix for many
1. Go to DirectXDiagnostics; Start -> Run -> dxdiag.exe
2. Just go to the sound part of directx and disable sound acceleration

34. avi files causing high cpu usage again with installation of XP SP1 & SP2
To correct the misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following registry key.
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-
9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32"
This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file property queries
on these files. This will not effect your ability to play files, get file attributes, or even
view thumbnails . I really think Microsoft is trying to make sure people only use mpeg

35. Getting More Processing Power
A clarification is needed on Spongebob's Tweak post for getting more processing power.
"In the Run box, type "Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks". This frees up
any idle tasks running in the background so that Windows XP <\l > can devote its
full attention to what you want it to do. For example playing graphic intensive
games."
While it DOES free up idle tasks, according to Microsoft , it can take up to 15 minutes
to do so. You would not want to run this task before playing a game or using your
machine as it will actually cause any tasks waiting for the system to become idle to
be performed immediately.
Quote from Microsoft:
"When called from the command line, the ProcessIdleTasks work is done in the
background asynchronously. It can take 10 to 15 minutes for idle tasks to complete. Task
Manager will report processes running, and the disk will likely be active during this
time"

36. Disable XP Boot Logo msconfig
It is possible to disable XP splash screen, which will slightly speed up the overall boot
process. Be aware that removing the splash screen will also cause you not to see any
boot-up messages that might come up (chkdsk, convert ... ), but if your system runs
without any problems then it should not matter.

1. Edit boot.ini
2. Add " /noguiboot" right after "/fastdetect".
(or check the /noguiboot switch in msconfig on the boot.ini tab)

Upon restarting, the splash screen will be gone. It can be re-enabled by removing the new
switch.

37. Unload .dll's to Free Memory
Windows Explorer caches DLLs (Dynamic-Link Libraries) in memory for a period of

1. Find the key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explor
er].
2. Create a new sub-key named 'AlwaysUnloadDLL' and set the default value to equal '1'
to disable Windows caching the DLL <\l > in memory.
3. Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

I tried this after running a intense program , then watched the task manager ;

38. Stop Jerkey Graphics
have for a long time had problems with "jerky" graphics in some 3d games and 3dmark,
and have had relativly high cpu loads in idle condition.
The cpu load would pulse from 1-2% up to 10-12%-load with about three-five seconds
intervals...(in idle)
The jerking has not been due to low perfomance hardware or old drivers and I have had
the problems on two seperate systems.
If you are connected to a LAN and have similar problems, this might be the solution:

1.RightClick "MyComputer"
2.Select "Manage"
3.Click on "Device Manager"
4.DoubleClick on your NIC under "Network Adapters"
5.In the new window, select the "Advanced" tab
6.Select "Connection Type" and manuelly set the value of your NIC. (Not "Auto Sense"
which is default.)
7.You should reboot...
On my systems the "jerking" in 3D games was completly gone, and so was the high idle
cpu load.

39.Clear pagefile on shutdown
For added security you should always clear the page file upon shutting down your
computer . Windows uses this file as extra ram . Lets say that you are working on a
confidential MS Word doc. When you load this document it is loaded into ram. To save
ram windows places certain items in the page file. The page file can then be opened and
the document can be extracted as well as any other open program or files. However
Microsoft has implemented a feature that will clear the page file but they do not have it
enabled by default. Please note, this will slightly increase the amount of time it takes to
shut down your computer but it is well worth it.
Start Regedit. If you are unfamiliar with regedit please refer to our FAQ <faq.asp> on
how to get started.
Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\Memory Management
Select ClearPageFileAtShutdown from the list on the right.
Right on it and select Modify.
Change the value to 1 to enable.
Reboot your computer.

40. Cab files are not folders
XP treats Cab files like folders, to stop this type 'regsvr32 /u cabview.dll' at the command
prompt.
To reverse it type 'regsvr32 cabview.dll'.

41. Delete Unwanted Screen Savers Loaded with XP
If anyone else was wondering how to get rid of the annoying Screen Savers that
Microsoft feels you have to have with XP they made it a little more difficult than normal.

1. First delete the screen savers you want to get rid of in either
C:\Windows\system32\dllcache or depending on if or how you installed the Service
Pack(s) also in C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386. (To see these folders you must have
"Show hidden files and folders" checked and "Hide protected operating system files"
unchecked in Folder Options > View .)
2. Delete the screen savers in C:\Windows\system32 (always assuming your XP is
installed in C:\Windows). If you have omitted step 1. Windows file protection will
replace the files within seconds.
Voila---no more Screen Savers!!!!

42. Make icons in windows appear quicker
In Windows XP everytime you open My Computer to browse folders XP automatically
searches for network files and printers . This causes a delay in displaying your icons.
You probably see the "default" windows icon and as you scroll it changes to the correct
icon. This is how to stop that...

1. Open My Computer
2. Click on the Tools menu and select Folder Options...
3. Under Folder Options select the view tab.
4. Uncheck the very first box that reads "Automatically search for network folders and
printers".
5. Click "Apply" or "OK"

You should see a dramatic increase in speed when Windows displays your icons.

43. Speed-up log-in tremendously!
If like me you've tried everything else and your log-in and log-off to XP is still
tremendously slow then you might try this little trick. First, if there are any other users on
your computer see if they have a similarly long log-in. If they don't the problem might be
your roaming profile, which is a folder where XP stores your settings you can access
them from anywhere in the network. Since these profiles can get really bloated(as in my
case) and are not really necessary unless you log-in from different computers in a large
network, you should disable it. Here's how:
1. Right click on My Computer, select the Manage option.
2. From the Management Console , select the Local Users and Groups option.
3. Double-Click on the Users folder that appears on the right panel.
4. Right click on the account with the slow log-in and select Properties.
5. Click on the Profile tab of the Properties Window.
6. Erase(but keep note a not of this) whatever path appears for Profile Path under User
Profile and Local Path under Home Folder: LEAVE THESE LINES BLANK.
7. Reboot. Try to log-in into the problematic account, you should see a significant speed-
boost, the computer might warn you once or twice that your Roaming Profile is not
available, ignore it and it will go away, good luck!
Note: You also will not have your settings and files that a roaming profile provides across
a network.
44. Shutdown XP Faster
1) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry <\l > key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1 in the Value
data text box
For the next two, if the dword value indicated does not exist, create it:
Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the
Value data to 2000
Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value
data to 1000
Reboot <\l >
If still having a problem, make the next change:
2) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000
NOTE: The lowest value Windows will recognize is 1000 (1 second)
ADVISORY: While rare, the "WaitToKillService" tweak can cause problems. If an
application is in the process of saving data and the associated service is stopped
prematurely, the data will not be saved and may be lost. (Tweak, Note and Advisory from
Forum Admin)
45. Nvidia detonator overclock control tweak
This tweak will only work with Nvidia gpu's with an nvidia detonator driver. It can be
downloaded from
We are going to need the windows registry . always make sure you make a backup of
your registry before you are going to edit it. Open your registry by pressing the start
button choose run and type regedit.
Start > run > regedit
while in the registry find
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA corporation\Global\NVTweak
click on the NVTweak folder you now see and create a new Dword value name it
CoolBits (make sure you use a big C and B) one's created open it and make the value 2
(hex or decimal)
This was the tweak. You can now go to your display properties select advanced in the
settings tab and then go to your detonator there you would find a new function called
clock frequencies.
46. Fix problems with USB DSL/Cable modems ( this is good for midi
contolers,Keydoards,audio & midi Interface , ANY Hardware Interface i.e :usb dat , midi
controlers on so on. a few prob was fix here... for example :Audio drop outs , midi &
audio conflicts, Lost midi mappings, Harddrive fails (extrernal usb harddrives
Some usb dsl/cable modems may get disconnected after a little while. A possible reason
that could cause this problem is that in windows xp there is an option that allows the
computer to turn off a usb device to save power. To disable this option:

1) click start, highlight my computer, right click and select properties and a window will
pop up <l > with the system properties
2) click on the hardware tab and press the device manager button
3) expand the universal serial bus controllers
4) Double click on the USB Root Hub .
5)Select the Power Management tab and UNTICK the "allow the computer to turn off the
device to save power"

If you have more than one USB Root Hub, then you should apply the steps to each one of
them
That's it, you won't need to restart the computer!

47 This setting optimizes the contiguous file allocation size for the file system and can be
especially useful for disk intensive applications. Open up your registry and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem
Create a DWORD value named 'ConfigFileAllocSize' and set the value to '200' (in hex) or 512
(decimal

48. Remove Balloon Tips
With this setting, some of this pop-up text is not displayed. The pop-up text affected by this setting includes "Click here to begin" on the Start button, "Where have all my programs gone" on the Start menu, and "Where have my icons gone" in the notification area.

START > RUN > GPEDIT.MSC > USER CONFIGURATION > ADMINISTRATIVE TEMPLATES > START MENU AND TASKBAR > FIND REMOVE BALLOON TIPS ON START MENU ITEMS > CHECK ENABLED > OK

49. Delete Unwanted Screen Savers Loaded w/XP
If anyone else was wondering how to get rid of the annoying Screen Savers that Microsoft feels you have to have with XP they made it a little more difficult than normal.


1. First navigate to “C:\windows\system32\dllcache”. Cut and paste or type in your address bar to get there because it is a hidden folder . Once there, delete the Screen Savers in that folder . Otherwise, you will find that they will come back no matter how many times you delete them from your system 32 folder.
2. Then you have to go to C: \Windows\system32 and delete the Screen Savers you want to get rid of . (Answer the file protection popups with cancel and yes.)
3. Voila---no more Screen Savers!!!!

50. Memory Performance Tweak
These Settings will fine tune your systems memory
management -at least 512MB of ram recommended
go to start\run\regedit -and then to the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
1.DisablePagingExecutive -double click it and in the decimal put a 1 - this allows XP to keep data in memory now instead of paging sections of ram to harddrive yeilds faster performance.
2.LargeSystemCache- double click it and change the decimal to 1 -this allows XP Kernel to Run in memory improves system performance alot
Reboot and watch your system fly ..happy tweakin
Note: This tweak may cause problems with ATI cards *this is documented by ATI(tweak forum Admin)
Disable Auto-Restart
When Running windows and it crashes you will get a blue screen and it will automatically restart, often it will restart too fast for you to see the error message. You could check the error log in this case but that is too easy. We are going to disable auto restart on system failure.
1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System (Windows+Pause works, too)
2. Go to Advanced
3. Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings...

Open Explorer From Command Line
In the command prompt, you can launch Windows Explorer anytime by simply typing "Explorer" and hitting Enter. However, if you happen to be deep into some directory structure and want to view that location in Explorer, you can do so right from there. Simple enter "explorer ." to launch Explorer with the directory you are in displayed. "Explorer .." and you will get the same, only one directory back. Basically, any path you enter after "explorer" will be the launch directory of Explorer when it opens.
Faster Dual Boot Timeout - Part 2
Last week, one of our tips had to do with changing the time allowed for choosing another OS if you have a dual boot setup. That tip involved editing boot.ini. A few users submitted an easier way to do this. Here is what was sent in (thanks Kashaf):
"There's anotherr way to change the dual boot time, which I find more idiot proof than modifyin the boot.ini file. Go to Control Panel, then System. In System, click on Advanced, then "Startup & Recovery " Settings. There, you find options for changing the amount of time for selecting an Operating System. It also allows you to change the amount of time for choosing Recovery Options. Of course, there is also an option for modifying the boot.ini file itself. So it's kinda like having two options to do the same thing."
Stop Highlighting New Programs
In Windows XP, after you install a new program, it is highlighted in your start menu and a little bubble window will show up telling you there is no software. It's a waste because you just installed it - of course you know there is new software. You can disable this feature easily:
1. To do this Click Start, right-click at the top of the Start menu where your name is displayed, and then click Properties.
2. In the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box, on the Start Menu tab, click Customize.
3. Click the Advanced tab, and then clear the Highlight newly installed programs check box.
4. Click OK, and then click OK again.
Disable Error Reporting in XP
By default, Windows XP will ask to report any program errors to Microsoft. It can be a bit annoying, especially because you're already annoyed the program crashed in the first place. Most of us just hit Don't Send and move on. Well, you can stop Windows from asking every time. Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced and click the "Error Reporting" button at the bottom. Choose "Disable error reporting" and hit OK.
Striping your Swap File in XP
All versions of Windows make use of a swap file. This is virtual memory and acts as hard drive storage space for memory items when you run low on actual physical memory. Use of the swap file slows down Windows quite a bit because hard drives are simply nowhere near as fast as system memory. But, you can speed up access to the swap file by using stripping. Stripping is a technique of RAID whereby data is spanned across more than one drive at the same time. Windows XP has code built-in which will stripe the swap file across two drives when you assign sizes to more than one partition. In order to take advantage of this, you need to have two or more hard drives in your system and place the swap file across the two separate drives, not simply two separate partitions on the same drive.
Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance / Settings. Hit the Advanced tab and go down to the virtual memory section and hit Change. Choose your first partition where you want the swap file, then select Custom Size and enter the size you want. If you set the initial size and max size to the same value, the swap will not be resized on the fly and can lead to better performance. Then choose another partition on a separate drive and do the same.
Windows will then split the swap file among the two drives.
View System Uptime
To view the time XP Pro has been running, you can make use of a little systeminfo utility at the command line. Simply open up your command prompt by going to the Start > Accessories > Command Prompt. At the prompt, type "systeminfo" and press Enter. After a few seconds of scanning, some info will pop up tell you all kinds of stuff about your PC. Scroll up to the near the top and you will see the total uptime of your computer since your last restart
Faster Dual Boot Timeout
If you dual boot your PC using Windows XP's dual boot process, you can reduce the timeout period your PC uses before booting to the default OS. This can be useful if you use the same OS most of the time and don't like the longer wait. You can always press enter and skip the wait, but why wait? To do it, here's the procedure:
1) Locate and Open the hidden file "boot.ini" in notepad or your favorite text editor. This file will likely be in the root directory on the boot partition of your "master" HD.
2) Locate the line - timeout=30 (default is 30 seconds). Change this value to any time desired. Be careful not to choose too low of a setting or you may not have time to select your other OS's. Also, be careful not to change other lines as this may prevent your PC from booting at all.
3) Save the file. The next time you boot your PC, the changes will take effect.
Convert FAT32 to NTFS
With Windows XP, to change from FAT 32 to NTFS file system for more stability, security and less fragmentation, open the command prompt and type:
Convert C: /FS:NTFS
"C" being the drive you wish to convert. Make sure there is a space between the C: and the foward slash (/). Once you press enter it will ask you for confirmation and press Y. Then press Y and enter once more to reboot. After the reboot, you will have an NTFS partition with no data loss
Change the Browser Title
You can change the name of your Internet Explorer browser in Windows XP Pro, if you are so inclined.
1. Click Start > Run > Type gpedit.msc
2. Click User Configuration > Windows Setting > Internet Explorer Maintenance > Browser User Interface
3. Double click on Browser Title
4. Click on Customize Title Bars
5. Type in whatever you want
6. Click OK
Now, if you open a new window for IE, you should see the title has changed.
Turn Off User Tracking
If you are using Windows XP Pro, you can turn off user tracking and save your PC a little extra overhead. Basically, user tracking is Windows tracking users' common file access patterns so that it can customize your user experience based on your habits. An example of this would be the customized start menu which lists the most commonly used programs. If you use the classic layout, though, then this user tracking is useless to you. You can turn it off by going to Start -> Run and typing "gpedit.msc" and pressing enter. Once in, navigate to User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Start Menu and Taskbar. Here you should see a setting for "Turn Off USer Tracking". Double-click it, enable it, and save your changes.
Clear your Prefetch
There are many actions one can do to their PC every so often to keep it in good shape, running smoothly, and not being crammed with crap you don't need. One of these actions is to clean your prefetch. Look in C:/Windows/Prefetch. You will find files in there for all the applications you run on your PC. Basically, what this is is a little cache for your software. Windows will monitor your activity and "prefetch" data, thereby speeding up the operation for you. It consists of information Windows think your programs are going to request. Over time, though, some of the files in your prefetch folder might correspond to software you don't even use anymore. Its safe to wipe these prefetch files out. Just clear the entire folder out. Those applications you use frequently will simply restore their prefetch files next time you launch them, so there is no harm done. And it will clear up disk space.
RAM 101

Basic RAM principles (DDR-SDRAM in particular):

1) Random access memory relies on an electrical charge, which is constantly refreshed, to hold data. Without power, memory is lost. It does not retain data without power.

Webopedia.com definition of DDR-SDRAM: Short for Double Data Rate-Synchronous DRAM, a type of SDRAM that supports data transfers on both edges of each clock cycle (the rising and falling edges), effectively doubling the memory chip's data throughput.

2) DDR RAM is Dual Data Rate RAM. If your mobo uses DDR RAM, your BIOS may list actual bus speed (half of RAM's rated DDR speed), or actual DDR speed. If you are unfamiliar with DDR ratings, bandwidth ratings and required bus speeds (and how they all correspond), see the attached .doc file.

3) Higher numbers (3-4-4-8 being the highest) equate to looser timings. Lower number (2-2-2-5 being the lowest) equate to tighter timings. Ultimately, a timing is an interval based on clock cycles. If a particular event that coincides with a particular timing is occurring every two clock cycles, then it is running tighter than if it were occurring every 4 clock cycles. The occurrence is effectively happening more quickly (in less clock cycles) with a "tighter" timing.

4) 1:1 CPU:RAM synchronicity offers best performance on Intel systems (the only exception being principle #6). Loosening timings to achieve higher FSB will offer better performance than tight timings with limited FSB. When overclocking, highest CPU FSB is the ultimate goal.*

5) Conversely, at max CPU FSB, or any given clock speed, tighter timings will offer better performance than looser timings.*

6) Running RAM faster than the CPU offers mildly better performance than 1:1. If you have found your CPU's max, and have the headroom to run a divider that will run the RAM faster than the CPU, then go for it. Limiting your CPU overclock to run the RAM faster than the CPU, however, will reduce performance. Again, go for the highest CPU FSB possible first and foremost.

7) RAM's rated speed is not its required speed. Even though RAM may be rated to run up to DDR500, it will still run at the corresponding bus speed of the system.

A few examples: if you have an 800 mhz FSB CPU, and you install DDR500, it will still only be running at DDR400, at stock bus speeds, until you up the mobo's FSB. If you are running a 533 mhz FSB CPU in conjunction with PC3200, the RAM will still be running at 266 mhz in 1:1 at stock bus speeds. The benefit of having faster-rated RAM is to allow for higher overclocking.

8) Your mobo will support any speed of RAM above what it is rated for. You can always run faster-rated RAM at slower speeds (assuming the necessary system bus speed can be achieved). The highest official JEDEC RAM speed is PC3200, so this is most likely why motherboards only officially support up to PC3200. If you look a little futher into your manufacturer's compatibility list (if they've actually taken the time to test compatibility), you will most likely find that the board does officially support any given higher-rated RAM.

For example, if you can achieve a FSB of 270 with your CPU, then your mobo will support PC4400. If you can achieve a FSB of 250, then your mobo will support DDR500. Again, you can install any faster-rated RAM in your motherboard, but it will only be running at the twice the speed of the system bus.

9) If your mobo supports dual channel memory, then take advantage of it. Dual channel memory does not necessarily need to be purchased in a dual channel "kit", but you are best to install two identical matching sticks when running dual channel. If running dual channel with two speeds of RAM, your mobo will only operate in dual channel mode at the speed of the slowest stick. Dual channel memory greatly increases memory throughput (ideally it is supposed to double memory bandwidth, but in reality, this is not true).

10) Running RAM slower than the CPU (also referred to as "using a divider") hinders performance.

With these things in mind, as they pertain to overclocking, the following is recommended:

1) Find your highest possible CPU overclock, even if this means running a divider.

2) Leave timings as loose as possible (3-4-4-8) in 1:1 to establish the highest possible speed that your RAM will achieve.

3) If you are using a divider, or you have established that your CPU will not overclock any further, or you have decided that you only want to run your CPU at clock speeds slower than the RAM's max, then start tightening timings to achieve more performance from your RAM.

4) If you are looking for maximum performance, and are forced to use a divider to achieve maximum CPU overclock, test your highest 1:1 (assumedly with loose timings) against your highest CPU overclock (with a divider and tightest possible timings). Establish for yourself which offers best performance in your system.

5) If you are using a divider, you will greatly improve performance by installing RAM that corresponds with your CPU's overclock (i.e. allow stable 1:1 operation). Along these same lines, if you are in the market for RAM, and want the best performance out of your system, establish your CPU's highest overclock before making your purchase.
